A 27-year-old youth named Ashikuzzaman was hacked to death over a dispute regarding homestead land in Jhikargachha upazila of Jashore. The incident took place on Tuesday night in Sonakur village of the upazila.

The victim, Ashikuzzaman, was the son of Asir Uddin of Sonakur village and worked in the pathology department of a local health center. On Wednesday morning, police detained a 45-year-old man named Fazlur Rahman while he was receiving medical treatment, in connection with the incident.

According to police and local residents, Asir Uddin and his cousin Fazlur Rahman's family had been locked in a long-standing dispute over two decimals of land adjacent to their houses. A physical altercation broke out between the two sides regarding the issue on Tuesday morning, leaving Asir Uddin and his eldest son Ashrafuzzaman (50) injured.

Ashikuzzaman was not at home during the initial altercation. Upon returning from his workplace at night, he became enraged after seeing his father and brother in a bloodied state. This triggered a second round of clashes between the two families around 12:45 AM.

At one point during the clash, Fazlur Rahman, his brother Nazrul Islam, and Nazrul's two sons Arif and Moniruzzaman allegedly hacked Ashikuzzaman indiscriminately with domestic sharp weapons (da), leaving him dead on the spot.

Demanding justice for the killing, the victim's father Asir Uddin said, "Over a land dispute, my brother Fazlur, Nazrul, and Nazrul's two sons have together hacked my son to death. I demand justice for this."

Ashikuzzaman's body has been sent to the Jashore General Hospital morgue for an autopsy. Further legal steps are underway.
