The aviation sector in Bangladesh is facing a major crisis as security restrictions at Saudi Arabian airports have disrupted air travel, affecting 141 flights and nearly 22,000 passengers. The disruptions, which began on October 11, are a direct result of heightened security measures implemented by Saudi authorities following threats of attacks by Houthi rebels in Yemen.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) confirmed that the affected flights include both direct and transit routes. Biman Bangladesh Airlines has been forced to suspend its operations in three phases, with flights to Dammam cancelled until October 25 and flights to Riyadh suspended until October 31. This prolonged suspension has left thousands of migrant workers and pilgrims in a state of uncertainty.
According to the official data, 66 direct flights and 75 transit flights have been impacted. The direct flights include 27 from Biman Bangladesh Airlines, 10 from US-Bangla Airlines, 19 from Saudia, and 10 from Riyadh Air. Additionally, major international carriers including IndiGo, Emirates, Qatar Airways, flydubai, SalamAir, Air India, and EgyptAir have seen their transit schedules disrupted, further complicating the travel landscape for passengers.
Many passengers have expressed frustration after arriving at the airport only to find their flights cancelled. For migrant workers, the delay poses significant professional and financial risks, as they face potential job losses or visa issues due to their inability to reach their workplaces on time. Airlines are struggling to accommodate passengers on alternative routes, but the ongoing security restrictions have severely limited capacity.
CAAB officials stated that they are in constant communication with Saudi authorities to monitor the situation. However, until the security risks are fully mitigated, the resumption of normal flight schedules remains uncertain. Airlines have been instructed to provide clear communication to affected passengers and offer flexible rebooking or refund options where possible.
This crisis has placed immense pressure on the aviation industry in Bangladesh. Given the high volume of traffic between the two nations, the disruption is expected to have a lasting impact on travel logistics. Authorities have urged passengers to remain patient while they work to resolve the logistical challenges caused by these regional security concerns.
