A horrific incident of robbery and murder has shaken the Chhagalnaiya upazila of Feni, where a local muezzin and auto-rickshaw driver, Abdul Haque (45), was brutally attacked by passengers. The incident occurred on Friday night along the Feni-Chhagalnaiya regional highway near the Bangla Bazar area. The perpetrators, posing as passengers, attacked the driver with sharp weapons to steal his auto-rickshaw.
Abdul Haque, a resident of Matiagoda village in the Mahamaya Union, was a dedicated muezzin at a local mosque. To support his struggling family, he had purchased an auto-rickshaw on an installment plan just a month ago. Unfortunately, the very vehicle he relied on for his livelihood became the target of criminals, leading to his untimely death.
According to police reports and family members, the suspects hired Haque’s auto-rickshaw from Chandgazi Bazar on Friday night. Upon reaching a secluded spot in the Bangla Bazar area, the passengers attacked him from behind with sharp weapons, causing severe head injuries. After leaving him bleeding on the road, the assailants fled the scene with the vehicle.
Local residents rushed the critically injured driver to the Feni 250-bed General Hospital. Given the severity of his condition, he was later transferred to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. Despite the best efforts of the medical team, Haque succumbed to his injuries early Saturday morning.
His eldest son, Mohammad Sifat Hossain, expressed the family's profound grief, noting that they are now left destitute. With the burden of unpaid installments and the loss of their sole breadwinner, the family is facing a dire financial crisis. They have demanded immediate justice and the arrest of those responsible for the heinous crime.
Law enforcement authorities have launched an investigation into the incident and are actively searching for the suspects. The local community has expressed outrage over the incident, calling for increased security measures for auto-rickshaw drivers in the region. Police officials have assured that they are working to recover the stolen vehicle and bring the perpetrators to justice.
