A protest procession organized by the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) in the capital's Purana Paltan area faced a violent disruption when a group of individuals, identifying themselves as activists of Juba Dal and Chhatra Dal, attacked the rally. The procession was brought out to protest the obstruction of female Baul folk singers in Sunamganj and to demand the release of Dipak Sheel, former president of the Student Union. The attackers reportedly raised objections over the 'Joy Bangla' slogan chanted during the rally, triggering clashes that left two CPB members injured late Monday night.
The tension began when CPB leaders and activists gathered for a protest rally starting from their central office in Purana Paltan and concluding at the Paltan intersection. During the subsequent brief rally, participants chanted slogans including 'Joy Bangla, Joy Samajtantra'. According to eyewitnesses and party sources, around 40 to 50 people identifying as BNP-affiliated student and youth wing members rushed to the spot, strongly objecting to the 'Joy Bangla' slogan. Heated arguments quickly escalated into aggressive confrontations, with the attackers chanting counter-slogans targeting the Awami League.
Amidst the chaos, at least two CPB members were physically assaulted by the unruly crowd. Outnumbered, the CPB members retreated from the intersection back toward their central office. However, the attackers pursued them and continued to hoot slogans right outside the party headquarters for nearly an hour, creating a state of siege and terror in the commercial hub.
Prompt action by the police prevented the situation from deteriorating further. Law enforcement personnel rushed to the scene, rescued the trapped CPB members, and established a strong security presence around the central office. By late night, heavy police deployment was visible, ensuring that the situation remained under control while political leaders assessed the fallout of the unexpected clash.
Political analysts and civil society members have expressed deep concern over the incident, noting that intolerance toward differing slogans and political expressions poses a serious threat to democratic norms. The CPB leadership strongly condemned the assault, demanding immediate accountability for those who took the law into their own hands. Authorities have assured that investigations are underway to identify the perpetrators and maintain public order in the sensitive downtown area.
