Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss and elected to bat first in the opening Test of the series against the West Indies at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur. Opting to bat on a pitch expected to offer variable bounce as the match progresses, the hosts aim to set a commanding total. However, the pre-match build-up was marred by a significant blow for the home side, with veteran batter Mushfiqur Rahim ruled out of the fixture due to a finger injury.
Mushfiqur suffered the injury to his right index finger during a training session on Tuesday morning. Visibly in considerable pain after taking a blow in the nets, the 38-year-old was immediately escorted back to the dressing room with his finger heavily taped. Although subsequent X-ray scans revealed no structural damage or major fractures, and medical staff initially considered him available for selection overnight, the team management ultimately decided against risking the senior campaigner. Notably, Mushfiqur had also missed Bangladesh's previous Test assignment against the West Indies during their Caribbean tour in 2024 due to fitness issues.
In the absence of the seasoned campaigner, the team management drafted in rising batter Towhid Hridoy to bolster the middle order. Hridoy, who earned his Test cap against Zimbabwe in June, comes into the side on the back of impressive domestic form, including an unbeaten 350-run knock for Bangladesh A during their tour of South Africa in August. His inclusion adds youthful exuberance and stability to the batting unit as they look to counter a probing West Indian bowling attack.
On the bowling front, Bangladesh opted for a well-balanced attack featuring two frontline fast bowlers in Shoriful Islam and Hasan Mahmud, alongside a formidable spin trio. The combination reflects careful consideration of the Mirpur pitch conditions, which traditionally favour slow bowlers as the match wears on. The hosts are banking on their bowling depth to restrict the visitors and create early breakthroughs.
Currently positioned fourth in the ICC World Test Championship standings, Bangladesh face an uphill battle if they harbor ambitions of reaching the tournament final. To stay in contention, the team must secure victories in at least four of their remaining six Tests in the current cycle, making a strong start in the Mirpur encounter absolute paramount. The players and coaching staff are well aware of the stakes as they kick off this crucial home series.
